Pinsent Masons advises on £44m software procurement for NHS National Services in Scotland

3 February 2010

Pinsent Masons, the international law firm with offices in Glasgow and Edinburgh, has negotiated a £44m contract for NHS National Services Scotland for a new patient management system. The contract is a national framework in line with NHS Scotland's eHealth Strategy, which will enable any Health Board in Scotland to have access to the system and associated modules over the next four years.

The new system will speed up patient care by making patient records instantly available to authorised staff throughout hospital departments.

Commenting on the signing, Pinsent Masons partner Yvonne Dunn said: "We were determined to get the best deal for the NHS in Scotland. This has been a complex procurement and the ability of the consortium Health Boards, NHS National Services Scotland and the Programme Team to work as a strong team has led to successful delivery of the framework contract. From our perspective, we have developed a depth of expertise in healthcare IT contracts that is hard to find in Scotland outside of the NHS itself."

Alan Lawrie, Consortium  Programme Board Chairman said: “We believe that this contract and the solutions that will be delivered in each board over the next two years will play an important role in streamlining patient services leading to faster diagnosis and treatment while enhancing patient safety. Clinicians will have easier and quicker access to medical records and patients will benefit from having more time with healthcare professionals. Not only does this contract give us a modern technical base but it has been chosen by the staff who will be using it.”

Initially the five Consortium NHS Boards involved in the procurement (Ayrshire & Arran, Borders, Grampian, Greater Glasgow and Clyde, and Lanarkshire) will place contracts to the value of £44M. These Boards, together with NHS Lothian who already have this system, care for 70% of the Scottish population.  Additional Health Boards are already in discussion about how this national framework can benefit them.
